Meet Our Team
Our team is passionate about changing clinical teaching and learning.
We discovered the need for improved resources to facilitate faculty teaching and student learning for clinical judgment from years of clinical practice and nursing education.
Based on stakeholder interviews and personal experience, we recognized the unique nature of this teaching environment required a new approach ensure clinical faculty and student success.
Together, we have designed, implemented, and evaluated the Heid ATE Guide for Clinical Teaching and Learning©, Recommendations for Use, and Evaluation Rubric in multiple settings. And we are just getting started!
Our tool is designed to facilitate faculty development of intentional teaching strategies to guide students as they learn clinical judgment skills in applied settings with the patient's story at the center of care.
Will you join us to disrupt clinical teaching and learning to improve clinical judgment and enhance the delivery of safe, quality care for all?
Christine L. Heid, PhD, RN, CNE, CHSE
Principal Investigator
Dr. Heid has studied clinical teaching and learning for over a decade in all levels of nursing education. Her experience in clinical practice includes medical-surgical, oncology and palliative care, and cardiovascular procedures in large urban healthcare systems and small rural communities. Working in practical, associate, and baccalaureate nursing programs afforded Dr. Heid the opportunity to conceptualize and develop the Heid ATE Guide for Clinical Teaching and Learning© to meet the need for a common language for faculty and students that keeps the patient at the center of nursing care management and clinical judgment formation. Dr. Heid received her BSN from Mount Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio and her Master of Science in Nursing and Healthcare Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. She serves a Nursing Education Consultant at ATI Nursing Education and per diem Registered Nurse in cardiovascular services at Avita Health System.

Dr. Crum has passion in creating awareness about adverse childhood experience and trauma informed care. She has collaborated in the development and use of the Heid ATE Guide for Clinical Teaching and Learning© as well as the integration of the Heid tool across the curriculum. Dr. Crum received her BS in ED from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, her BSN at MedCentral College of Nursing in Mansfield, Ohio, and her DNP from Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. She currently is an Assistant Professor at Ashland University teaching in the undergraduate accelerated and graduate programs and a Nurse practitioner at University Hospitals urgent care and the county juvenile detention center.
